The Opening Ceremony was magnificent, the sport was fantastic, the weather was actually alright, the coverage was world class (big up the BBC), the public interest was sky high and the mood wherever I went was upbeat (not to any sporting events unfortunately!).
With the Olympic Games still so fresh in the mind, I thought I'd use it to gain momentum for the blog (is that the legacy they were on about?) and to try a new feature which will include me asking a question for all of the Benchers. For now I've called it "Four Men says..." Check it out.
What were your top 3 moments of the London 2012 Olympic Games?
Michael Jhagroo (MJ) @___M_J____
In third place………….Chris Hoy using some sort of in-built 'Nitro' to blister away from the pack to win Gold.
in second spot……….4x100m final. World record will stand for decades. With Bolt doing the Mobot to boot. Lovely touch. Respect.
1st………………………….Mo Farah winning the 5000. The determination to stay at the front for the whole last lap. Gave me goose bumps.
James Freestone (JF) @4menonabench_JF
2. Michael Phelps getting beaten by Chad Le Clos – Outstanding win and the interview of a besotted dad was great to watch. Plus Phelps showed the humility that’s made him arguably the greatest Olympian with the way he conducted himself at the medal ceremony.
3. Just having the opportunity to live the atmosphere in the Olympic Park – Just Fantastic.
I nearly chose Chris Hoy too. That moment plus Mo’s final lap of the 10k were only times I actually shouted at the TV screen!! That doesn’t happen very often, even watching Arsenal!!
Paul Edmund-Charles
1. David Rudisha – Quiet, unassuming silent assassin, ran the legs off his competitors with 200m section times of 23s, 25s, 26s and 26s……ridiculous. His humility when collecting his gold and the fact that he was grateful to Lord Coe for his input. A class act.
2. Nicola Adams – the 1st woman in Olympic history to win a gold medal, seeing her name in history for the end of time. She was fast, accurate and powerful…..she beat world ranked boxers to win and the crowd was (as Beckham would say) Amazing. Nicola, Nicola, Nicola the crowd screamed, she’ll have that memory for the rest of her life…..
3. Now this wasn’t a performance but left one of the biggest images in my mind. Either before, during or after the 200m, the camera’s focussed on a small boy holding a Go Bolt sign he had made, the boy was with his mum screaming along with the crowd and looked excited beyond belief to be there. In one hand he had his go bolt sign in the other he had a Jamaican flag which he was waving. The reason I felt so good about this was the boy, he was white. Bolt’s colour meant nothing to him and if we can teach the kids in this country not to see colour then the country has to be a better place.
Honourable mention to the Denise Lewis, Colin Jackson Michael Johnson behind the scenes support of Usain Bolt during the 100m.
So there you have it. Four different people. Four different perspectives. The London 2012 Olympic Games gave us so many memories - hopefully that we will never forget. Individual performances, historic moments, the atmosphere of Olympic Park, and the unity of mankind have touched the Four Men - and I am sure there are many more memories we could easily refer to (if only we were allowed five picks, or even ten!).

Honourable Mention: Going to the opening Ceremony technical rehearsal and watching the Opening Ceremony. Work of art. Showed there was more to these Isles, and I’m pleased that I was one of the few who saw more than the millions at home. Oh and my brother was in them.
1. Super Saturday (Ennis, Rutherford and Farrah 10k) – Britain ’s best hour in track and field ever. A night to remember. Even I got caught up in Team GB mania
2. David Rudisha 800m world record. An amazing feat.
3. Mens 200m Jamaica clean sweep topped off with the “No English Straight Patois” lyric by Warren Weir. I liked how Blake and Weir came across unpolished and raw, unlike Bolt who softens his accent due to his world-wide persona.

Until next time...

3. Nicola Adams - first Olympic gold medal for women's boxing. Totally dominated the fight and deserved her win, and will remain forever the first to do what she did. But she won my respect with her humility and boundless cheerfulness ....she had every right to be arrogant, but she wasn't.
ReplyDelete2. Mo Farah winning the 5000m - one of a very select band of athletes to have done the 'double' (10,000m and 5000m). An achievement in itself, but he stormed both events, and again he did it with humility....his expression as he crossed the line on both races said it all. I literally shouted myself hoarse cheering him to the finish line.
1. 4 x 100m relay - never before have I laughed out loud with sheer joy watching a race, but watching the Jamaican team was like watching a master class in how to run a sprint relay.....fluid, graceful and boy oh boy, DYAM fast! All four legs run in under 10 seconds each...phenomenal! And to know that amazing display took place in my home town... I will cherish that memory forever.
